But a rapid green trend in the countries such as Sri Lanka is primitive. The level of the awareness on green concept has become a reason responsible for the current green environment in the university libraries in Sri Lanka. Therefore, the main objective of this study was to examine the awareness on green library concept among selected university library professionals in Sri Lanka. The study was conducted based on the research framework which consists of five criteria namely, library building, operations and practices, programmes and services, information systems and library collection. The Survey method was used to gather data from randomly selected 13 academics in university libraries in western Province. Conducting interviews were the main tool used for primary data collection and self-observation was supportive to verify the collected data. According to the data analysis, 100% of librarians have heard about green library concept. Only 36% of librarians were actually aware of green concept. The main source of awareness was web sites. 71% of librarians believes that the non – awareness affects green movements in their libraries. Therefore, it was evident that the awareness on green library concept and its applications is not in a satisfactory level among the academics in university libraries. Hence, the most suitable and the very first action to be taken by the side of libraries or mother institution should be conducting awareness programmes.Item Identifying the Issues Using the Machine Readable Cataloguing Standard for the Library Automation in University Libraries in Sri Lanka(3rd International Conference on Library and Information Management, Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2019) Rathnayaka, R.M.D.P.Most of the libraries in the world have used the Machine Readable Cataloguing (MARC) for the automation their libraries which is the adoption of Manual Catalogue into machine-based system. Some of the versions in MARC are MARC I, MARC II, Universal Machine Readable Cataloguing - UNIMARC and MARC 21. Fifteen University Libraries in Sri Lanka had used Open Source Library Management Systems (OSLMS) and Commercial Library Management Systems (CLMS) for automation. Five out of fifteen University Libraries were selected as the sample. Sixty library staff members had responded for the given a structured questionnaire. It could be pointed out that had no proper level or proper format of MARC in LMSs. The awareness level of staff on MARC and its use were very low. Making union catalogue will be a difficult task because not having unity with OPAC among the University Libraries that is the major problem of the research.Item Developing an Academic Institutional Repository: a Case at the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University(3rd International Conference on Library and Information Management, Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2019) Rajapaksha, M. P.An institutional repository is defined as an online locus for collecting, preserving, and disseminating the intellectual output of an institution in digital form, particularly a research institution (New World Encyclopedia, 2018). Generally it includes materials such as journal articles, conference papers, peer reviews, electronic versions of theses and dissertations from an academic institution. The main purpose of this study is to share the experiences of setting up an institutional repository (IR) at General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU) and make suggestions to overcome the challenges for sustainability of the repository. Empirical method is used with the participatory approach in this study. Furthermore, the study focuses on some key issues to be considered when developing the repository. The institutional repository of KDU library network has developed by using D-Space software and running with a separate internal server. Formulating repository policy framework, authority control, copyright issues and persuading the academic staff to deposit their publications were considered as major challenges in this study. In order to encourage research scholars to deposit their publication, librarians should follow the marketing strategies to emphasize the impotence of the institutional repositoryItem Digital Preservation Strategies at the University of Peradeniya Library.(3rd International Conference on Library and Information Management, Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2019) Maheswaran, R.The purpose of this paper is to provide an account of digital archiving and preservation practices and processes successfully implemented at the University of Peradeniya Library.
