    Facebook users and undergraduates (Specially reference to Selected Universities in Sri Lanka)

    New media has play a pivotal role in enhance the relationship between the people and the media. Internet has pros and cons but more and more people all over the world using it for various purposes.Facebook is one of the largest online social network. In Sri Lankathere are more than 1.5 million Facebook users. Problems of this research were do Facebook users (undergraduates) use their account prudently and do they have enough knowledge on privacy settings.Objectives were to find out why the face book users reveal their privacy details through the account and found out whether the Facebook users are knowledgeable enough tosafe guard their privacy. This was Qualitative and Quantitative research. I used questionnaires and interviews to collect primary data. According to this research I came across most of the undergraduates were highly interested on Facebook. But they didn’t possess substantial knowledge about privacy settings.

    Trends and Challenges in cybercrime in Sri Lanka

    New media is a term meant to encompass the emergence of digital, computerized, or networked information and communication technologies in the later part of the 20th century. Most technologies described as "new media" are digital, often having characteristics of being manipulated, networkable, dense, compressible, interactive and impartial The Internet is known as a kind of global meeting place where people from all parts of the world can come together & share information. According to Hens,Reyns and Fisher they define “Cybercrime refers to any illegal activity that occurs in the virtual world of cyberspace” (Hens, Reyns and Fisher-2011). This research studied the Sri Lankan Cybercrimes and legal background about cybercrimes. In this research studied selected cases relating to cyber crimes in Sri Lanka. We examined the situation, evidence. In Sri Lanka there have been four main acts which used in cybercrime prevention. I content analyzed these acts. In Sri Lanka there is a challenge in preventing cybercrime. The growth of network-based crime has raised difficult issue in respect of appropriate balance between the needs of those investigating and prosecuting such crime, and the rights of users of such networks. Increase the awareness about new media literacy is one way to minimize cybercrimes. And Sri Lankan legal system needs to be modified.

    Internet and Law (Special reference to Sri Lanka)

    The Internet or most commonly referred net is one of the most amazing invention of human race. The Internet can be known as a kind of global meeting place where people from all parts of the world can come together & share information. Castells define network as “Network is a set of inter connected nodes. Nodes may be relevance to the network”. (Castells, 2009, p.19). The benefits people can reap by using the Internet is massive. Due to the rapid expansion of the Internet common mass get the assistance of Internet more and more in to their day to day life Another significant feature of the internet is not only it has abundant of rewards; it also consists of plentiful of disadvantages also. Advent of the internet crate a new path to the criminals to commit crimes. Traditional laws were not adequate to curb these complicated crimes. Hacking, virus, Identification theft, unauthorized access to the restricted information, Trojan, are some of so called sophisticated cyber felonies. The internet is a global network, so its regulation could not be left to the one country or an institute, collaborative effort is a must for prevent the internet crime. US department of Commerce. (Castells, 2009, p113) This research studied the Sri Lankan Cyber laws and international laws about cyber space and cybercrimes. Further it proposed a mechanism on curbing the internet crimes. Major limitation identified on this research was lack of effective law to protect Human rights in the cyber space in Sri Lanka. Objectives are refer cyber laws in Sri Lanka and studied selected cases related to cybercrime in Sri Lanka. Further it Suggest new solution to protect the human rights through the malicious usage of the Internet.
