Item A study of the application of the Community Radio in the Sri Lankan Perspective; Based on Kothmale Community Radio(11th Annual Research Symposium, Faculty of Graduates Studies, University of Kelaniya Sri Lanka, 2010) Jayasekara, A.H.D.; Jinadasa, M.P.K.; Rajapaksha, S.; Harath, D.B.; Somarathna, D.The objective of this study is to analysis of the impact of the Kothmale Community Radio towards its community. Problem is that why does community radio not function properly and what are the consequences that lead to collapse the Community radio. The Hypothesis The principle of the community radio has not been appropriately established. This study was carried out during the period of in 2010. Methodology has consisted both quantitative and qualitative approaches. In this, it was used survey study consisting 250 questionnaires, for Kothmale and villages which are closely situated behind the community radio. Participatory observation and interviewing were used as the qualitative tools. Findings reveal that at the early stage there was a great impact upon its community. In comparison to its beginning there is no consequential participation of the rural community for the radio and in return no greater advantage upon the rural mass at present. Nowadays, the impact of the national radio channels has been a wide practice rather community radio. No community participation as emphasized in its principle for the development of the community while, bigger political interferences which are channeled through the top to down political higher achy.Item Cartoon Films in Sri Lanka(University of Kelaniya, 2009-12-17) Jayasekara, A.H.D.Cartoon Films are once in which individual drawings,paintings, or illustrations are photographed frame by frame.Cartoon films created for the cinema,television or computer screen, featuring some kind of story or plot. Although it can use many different types of animation.With the introduction of computers, animation. With the introduction of computers, animation took on a whole new meaning. Many features films of today had animation incorporated into them for special effects.Cartoon films are often directed to,or appeal most to children,but easily can be enjoyed by all. The objective of this research is to identify Sri Lankan carton film inventors and technology. The methodology of this research is compromised with two vital research method.They are comparative method and case study method. Interviews and observations are used as tools of data collection.Secondary data were collected from sources such as relevant books,magazines,newspapers and internet. Mr.Daya Karunarathne was the father of Sri Lankan cartoon television, firstly used imported cartoon films.The advent of film technology opened opportunities to develop the art of cartoon films.Today animation cartoon is commonly produce with computers.Computer animation encompasses a variety of techniques,the unifying factors being that the animation is created digitally on a computer.Now cartoon films have been very popular in television commercials, both due to its graphic appeal,and the humor it can provide.Item Disaster Reporting in Print Media (Special reference to selected newspapers in Sri Lanka)(International Journal of Scientific Research and Innovative Technology, 2015) Jayasekara, A.H.D.Environmental information that will be important in future to build the sustainable society. Environmental reporting is, regardless of its name or disclosure media, to promote communication of organizations, to fulfill its accountability regarding environmental efforts in their activities, and to provide useful information to decision making of interested parties. Problem of the study was how print media reported one selected case in Sri Lanka in 2014.Objective is to study about disaster reporting in print media. Methodology is content analyzing. Selected three newspapers and content analyzed the newspapers in seven days. Time frame was 30th October 08th November. Selected three newspapers Rivira,Mawbima, Lakbima in seven daysafter the disaster. Analyzed headlines, articles, features, cartoons which related to the selected incident. More spaces had allocated to report this incident, mostly colour photos used and victim’s photos published. And most of the articles written to aroused this in reader’s emotion. And selected newspapers not given proper attention in media ethics.Media wants to be more responsibility during crises or disasters.Item Facebook users and undergraduates (Specially reference to Selected Universities in Sri Lanka)(International Journal of Scientific Research and Innovative Technology, 2015) Jayasekara, A.H.D.New media has play a pivotal role in enhance the relationship between the people and the media. Internet has pros and cons but more and more people all over the world using it for various purposes.Facebook is one of the largest online social network. In Sri Lankathere are more than 1.5 million Facebook users. Problems of this research were do Facebook users (undergraduates) use their account prudently and do they have enough knowledge on privacy settings.Objectives were to find out why the face book users reveal their privacy details through the account and found out whether the Facebook users are knowledgeable enough tosafe guard their privacy. This was Qualitative and Quantitative research. I used questionnaires and interviews to collect primary data. According to this research I came across most of the undergraduates were highly interested on Facebook. But they didn’t possess substantial knowledge about privacy settings.Item How political advertisements in Television media effected to the Presidential election 2010(11th Annual Research Symposium, Faculty of Graduates Studies, University of Kelaniya Sri Lanka, 2010) Jayasekara, A.H.D.; Somarathna, M.; Herath, H.M.D.B.; Television and politics, Sri LankaThroughout history politicians have used various methods, such as whistle-stop speeches, political advertising and political rallies, to achieve their "primary goal, the winning of votes. Politicians have found that it is most advantageous to use political advertising to persuade voters. Political advertising has always been a central feature of every culture. As encountered in the mass media, it is pervasive and inescapable Commercial advertisements are widely accepted as fair and legitimate marketing. Political advertisements deal with the production, dissemination, procession and effects of information, both through media and interpersonally, within a political context. In recent years, political advertising has become essential to campaign strategy, and many regard it as far more intrusive than routine commercial advertising. Because political advertising, unlike product advertising, must get results in a short period of time, political practitioners use several kinds of political advertising: image, issue and negative advertising. In television media it has big power to change behavior of the audience. Certain political activists have been struggling with the same task even longer, attempting to influence election outcomes by using media to communicate with the voters. Candidates issue position, candidate image, voter group membership and retrospective voting. The message of the advertisement is what ideas that the candidate wants to share with the voters. The message often consists of several talking points about policy issues. The points summarize the main ideas of the political advertisements and are repeated frequently in order to create a lasting impression with the voters The Objective is this research is to identify how television political advertisement effected to the presidential election 2010.Methodology of this study is survey method and comparative method. Observation and questionnaires used as data collection method. We collected data randomly from people in every district. We distributed 100 questionnaires per district. We considered the content of the political advertisements. We focused only two main candidates for this research. We considered nominations accepted date in 2009 to date which the election was held in 2010.When we analyzing data on last presidential election we paid our attention on age limit of the audience, and the television channel which was telecasted these commercials. According to our research we found television advertisement helped to create public opinion. Nationality and victory of war used to create these television commercials. Advertisements which was telecasted on ITN channel created more impact on the audience. This is because ITN has a wide coverage more than the other channels. We found eighteen advertisements which remembered to the audience. There were so many political advertisements at that time but, ?Tharunyata Hetak? was the most effected advertisement which telecasted on television.Because so many stars used to create that advertisement. Content, visuals, music, colours used to political advertisements to enhance their message.Item Internet and Law (Special reference to Sri Lanka)(2015) Jayasekara, A.H.D.The Internet or most commonly referred net is one of the most amazing invention of human race. The Internet can be known as a kind of global meeting place where people from all parts of the world can come together & share information. Castells define network as “Network is a set of inter connected nodes. Nodes may be relevance to the network”. (Castells, 2009, p.19). The benefits people can reap by using the Internet is massive. Due to the rapid expansion of the Internet common mass get the assistance of Internet more and more in to their day to day life Another significant feature of the internet is not only it has abundant of rewards; it also consists of plentiful of disadvantages also. Advent of the internet crate a new path to the criminals to commit crimes. Traditional laws were not adequate to curb these complicated crimes. Hacking, virus, Identification theft, unauthorized access to the restricted information, Trojan, are some of so called sophisticated cyber felonies. The internet is a global network, so its regulation could not be left to the one country or an institute, collaborative effort is a must for prevent the internet crime. US department of Commerce. (Castells, 2009, p113) This research studied the Sri Lankan Cyber laws and international laws about cyber space and cybercrimes. Further it proposed a mechanism on curbing the internet crimes. Major limitation identified on this research was lack of effective law to protect Human rights in the cyber space in Sri Lanka. Objectives are refer cyber laws in Sri Lanka and studied selected cases related to cybercrime in Sri Lanka. Further it Suggest new solution to protect the human rights through the malicious usage of the Internet.Item Members of Parliament and Their Official Web Sites; New Media Tool of Political Communication(2015) Rupasinghe, W.; Jayasekara, A.H.D.In a modern democracy, new media can be used by governments to involve citizens in decision-making, and by civil society to engage people in specific issues. However new media can also be used to broaden political participation by helping citizens to communicate with their representatives and with each other. Arguably this political communication is most important during election campaigns when political parties and candidates seek to mobilize citizens and persuade them to vote for a given party or candidate. The new media must be used by Parliaments, Parliamentarians, governments and political parties as they are highly effective tools to involve and inform citizens in public policymaking and in the formation of governments. But all these groups must develop strategies to deal with a wide array of both positive and negative effects of these rapidly growing media.New media has begun to take precedent over other communication outlets in part because of its heightened accessibility and usability. Using personal website can empower the public in a way that is far faster, cheaper and more pervasive than other forms of communication. They encourage pluralism, reach young people more than other media and encourage greater participation, accountability and transparency. This research discusses the impact politicians’ personal websites has over their overall electability and likability and explores the integration of website is an essential campaign tactic on both the local and national level.This research examined the impact of having personal website have over the way constituents view politicians. This research examined how politicians can use their website in the most effective fashion and incorporate these new media outlets as essential campaign tools and tactics. Content analysis selected thirty websites in Sri Lankan politicians. Research revealed that politician’s new media usage significantly influenced and enriched the experience an individual has with the public figure.Item Reflection of Sri Lankan identity through television commercials(2010-03) Jayasekara, A.H.D.In an industrial society, almost everyone is touched by advertising. People respond to advertising perhaps depend on it and, they may themselves be advertisers. Advertising tends to reflect the standard of living and the prosperity of the country. Television commercials are used for advertising proposes, not only Sri Lanka,but also in other countries. Television commercials are sometimes condemned for its materialism and for its encouragement to people to buy things needlessly-that it is a parasitical manipulator of minds. Objectives to advertising have increased in recent years.In short,advertising is the means by which we make known what we have to sell or what we want to buy.Advertising should be planned and created to achieve optimum results for the least cost.There is a close and important link between public relations and advertising. It is much easier and less costly to advertise a product or service when its supplier has a good reputation and when the product or service is well understood. Without the media, product cannot be exposed to the public. It makes all the difference between selling and advertising. The objective of the research is to identify how Sri Lankan image is reflected by the television commercials .Observation was used as the tool of data collection. Media consists of almost anything which can be used to convey an advertising message.These are being led by new media developments and primarily by new developments in the electronic media.Mass media advertising and broadcasting as we know are moving towards more specific targeting.Item Trends and Challenges in cybercrime in Sri Lanka(2015) Jayasekara, A.H.D.; Rupasinghe, W.New media is a term meant to encompass the emergence of digital, computerized, or networked information and communication technologies in the later part of the 20th century. Most technologies described as "new media" are digital, often having characteristics of being manipulated, networkable, dense, compressible, interactive and impartial The Internet is known as a kind of global meeting place where people from all parts of the world can come together & share information. According to Hens,Reyns and Fisher they define “Cybercrime refers to any illegal activity that occurs in the virtual world of cyberspace” (Hens, Reyns and Fisher-2011). This research studied the Sri Lankan Cybercrimes and legal background about cybercrimes. In this research studied selected cases relating to cyber crimes in Sri Lanka. We examined the situation, evidence. In Sri Lanka there have been four main acts which used in cybercrime prevention. I content analyzed these acts. In Sri Lanka there is a challenge in preventing cybercrime. The growth of network-based crime has raised difficult issue in respect of appropriate balance between the needs of those investigating and prosecuting such crime, and the rights of users of such networks. Increase the awareness about new media literacy is one way to minimize cybercrimes. And Sri Lankan legal system needs to be modified.
