Item The Theses and Dissertations Deposited in Postgraduate Institute of Archaeology Library: a Bibliographical Analysis.(Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya,Sri Lanka., 2017) Rathnabahu, R.M.N.; Perera, S.The collection of theses and dissertations deposited in the library of the Postgraduate Institute of Archaeology (PGIAR), University of Kelaniya plays a significant role in the field of archaeology and sub-disciplines. The collection that consists of 150 theses and dissertations is immensely popular among library users. However, no serious attempt has so far been made to analysis the collection in a specific order, therefore, its varied and non-orderly appearance makes hard to find research subject, person(s) responsible for supervision and what type(s) of postgraduate degree(s) have been awarded for the research study etc., at a glance. 50 theses and dissertations (9 PhD theses,19 MPhil theses and 22 MA dissertations) taken as a sample at the first stage to be analyzed with the following bibliographic specifications: subject of the research, period of study, affiliated organizations, supervision, medium of instruction, extent and references. According to the analysis, the first MA dissertation submission has taken place in 1992 by Raj Somadeva who is now a Senior Professor of Archaeology. Prishantha Gunawardhana submitted the first MPhil thesis in 1995 beingtoday a Professor of archaeology. Mr.Senarath Dissanayake, former Director General of Archaeology and Prishantha Gunawardhana submitted the first two PhD theses in 2003. It is noted that Prof. Senake Bandaranayke has been the highly commended supervisor for the period from 1992 to 2013.Historical archaeology, architecture and art history have gained popularity from the subjective point of view. Most of the research have been carried out in Sinhala. Regarding the extent and references, PhD theses take precedence. The analysis suggests to expand the areas of research, to follow systematic referencing and scientific writing, to include the abstract in English in the theses and dissertations written other than English and to publish the theses and dissertations by the PGIAR.Item Social Media Use by Undergraduate Students of Education in Nigeria: A Survey.(Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya,Sri Lanka., 2017) Wickramanayake, L.; Jika, S.M.This research investigates teacher students’ perceptions, intentions, experiences, attitudes, opinions, and barriers concerning social media (SM) use and impact of SM on their learning process. The study used a sample consisting of 242 teacher students selected from three higher educational institutions in Gombe State, Nigeria. A stratified sampling technique was applied to draw the sample, and a questionnaire survey method was used to collect the data. Data analysis was by means of simple and inferential statistics. The students widely used mobile phones to access SM, and SM was extremely popular for education, entertainment, and communication among the students. Educational and informational communities were preferred by students to other SM communities. The study further revealed that effective SM usage among students enhanced their different types of skills including learning. However, the study showed some barriers concerning students’ SM use, such as unstable electricity connections, security and privacy issues, internet costs, and unreliable internet connections. The outcome of this study will be a unique contribution because the pertinent literature provides little evidence or research highlights concerning teacher students’ and their SM use. The results of the present study may be a useful resource for university administrators, education policy makers, and innovative teachers in universities—especially in developing countries and particularly Nigeria—when considering integration of modern techniques and technologies with university teaching and learning.Item Electronic Information Resources and Academic Library Users.(Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya,Sri Lanka., 2017) Gaikwad, M.N.Information is generating from the every corner of the world and its explosion rate is very high and ever growing. It is difficult to retrieve particular information without wasting time, but today the information technology has changed the complexion of the academic libraries in a big way. On a side academic libraries were suffer three challenges- shrinking budgets, shortage of space and increasing cost of publications; on other side there are the challenges posed by the advances in the field of Information and Communication Technology. With the last few decades scenario has changed. The remarkable growth of e-publishing and access of the information in local, regional, national and international basis has solved the problem of time and space. E-resources have become bubbling boon for library professionals as well as library users in this Google era. The e-resources are available in multi-variety forms. The study examine the different types of e-information resources, access and use of subscribed UGC N-LIST and freely available e-resources by the faculty members, Ph.D scholars and UG Students of the Arts and Commerce College, Madha(Maharashtra) India. A structured questionnaire was distributed among faculty members, Ph.D scholars and UG students. The study confirmed that the all Ph.D Scholars are aware of various types of e-resources. Study evaluates the satisfaction level of the users on e-resources and the role of Internet in access of e-resources through different search engines (e.g. Google, Yahoo, etc.) and also offline databases in CD/DVD formats, Study also aims to highlight the problems encountered by the users and suggest some remedial measures for its improvements.Item Reading Habits of Medical Undergraduates in an Academic Library(Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya,Sri Lanka., 2017) Angammana, A.M.S.; Ranasinghe, S.University libraries as academic libraries play a major role in creating academic excellence as well as producing all round personalities. Though university libraries pay special attention in providing subject textbooks to its users, the collection should consists of other categories of resources too. In order to fulfill the needs of the users, librarians need to identify the users reading patterns and behavior. The present study aimed at investigating the use of library books by medical undergraduates. As specific objectives it was intended to find out whether medical students read extra books and whether pattern of reading differ according to study year. Methodology involved is a case study. The population was all undergraduates enrolled in the faculty of medical sciences, University of Sri Jayewardenepura from freshmen to final inthe year 2016. Total population was 1201 and total population was considered as the sample. Quantitative data was collected using the book loan statistics of circulation module of Library management system “KOHA” during the year 2016. Daily statistics of books checked out during January 2016 to December 2016 were analyzed. Subjects were coded using Dewey Decimal classification system.According to demographic data, sample consisted of 21% of males and 79% of females. Number of students who have borrowed books during the year were 610, that is 51% of the sample. Among them 12% were first years while 20%, 26%, 21%, 21% were second, third, fourth and final years respectively. 98% of the first year students have borrowed only textbooks. But this amount has decreased to 76% among final years. Percentages of textbooks borrowed by second, third and fourth years were 92%, 80%, 86% respectively. When considering other categories 17% of final years have borrowed fictions (English, Sinhala and translations) while only 1% of first years have borrowed fictions. This number varied through the study year as 7%, 18%, 10% in second, third and fourth years respectively. Findings revealed that majority of medical students read only textbooks and usage varies among the year of study. The lowest usage was observed from first year students, while third year students had the highest usage. Again in final year there is a decrease in usage. They tend to read other categories of books from third year onwards and most famous category was fictions. Also they have borrowed IT related and General knowledge books.Since this study shows a medium usage of library books, measures should be taken to increase the utilization of books especially by first years and final years. Also authorities should pay attention in fulfilling extra reading needs of medical undergraduates when developing the collection in order to assure effective library usage.Item Publication Pattern and Citation Analysis of the University of Madras: A Performance Analysis.(Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya,Sri Lanka., 2017) Perumal, A.; Chandrakumar, V.The aim of this paper is to analysis the publication pattern and citations analysis of publications of the faculty / researchers of the University of Madras. Besides, the unremitting collection of data with desired frequencies and research quality is a challenge. Notably, obtaining accurate and firstly data, i.e. real-time and near-real time are important for analysing, prevention, mitigation and management of ocean-based disasters. This paper discloses a model procedure for tide-gauge data management pertaining to ocean-based disasters and recognition of special events while highlighting the usability and prospects. The hydrostatics pressure sensors were installed at known depths below the surface in serene environments without anthropogenic effects whereas tide-wells equipped wave absorbers. Surface wave height radar sensors were installed at known heights above the surface referring to an eternal bench-mark. The data collected [f; frequency = 1 minute] were transmitted via satellite communiqué where the resulted time series was obtained via the global sea level monitoring facility provided by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC). The data were primarily processed by rectifying noises, null-data fields and outliers according to the IOC quality control standards. Afterwards, the tidal impact was examined while confiscating the residual variation. The process included assessing the astronomical forces of the Moon and the Sun using a Harmonic analysis of a time series, and quantifying the contribution of those tidal constituents. The pattern was appraised quantitatively, pertaining to the Luni-solar declinational diurnal constituent, the Principal Lunar declinational diurnal constituent, whereas the effects produced by the Moon (semidiurnal lunar), and the Sun (semidiurnal solar), whilst the spring and neap tide variations were determined. Ensemble empirical mode decomposition method was used to determine the inter-annual variability and related events. Data (f=1) were re-computed to diverse frequencies where event analyses, i.e., both short-term and long-term variations were performed Accordingly, meteo-tsunami, tidal and seasonal variations, El-Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO), whereas sea level rise were revealed and were identified as potential research areas.Item A Study on the Factors Affecting Employee Commitment in University Libraries in Sri Lanka.(Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya,Sri Lanka., 2017) Jayasinghe, K.K.Employee’s commitment is a major aspect of organizational success. Computer literate population is ever increasing and the majority of the students have basic computer skills when they arrive at the university and able to use online resources and interact via social media. In such circumstances, Internet can be heavily used as an information resource, retrieval tool, communication tool than the physical library. As such, academic libraries have also taken advantage of the trend and made them visible online.Though, Internet has not replaced the physical library but has made an impact. Therefore, objective of this paper is to highlight some changes Internet has brought to an academic library in a technical university. Trend analysis of library reader services data within year 2011 to 2016 along with the observation of usage of electronic information sources and services was done. According to the data, library registration of undergraduates and diploma students are parallel to university admissions but postgraduates registrations have declined by 22% and academic staff registrations by 50%. Registration renewals have increased in undergraduates (170%). Issuing of library materials has recorded a decline by 27% in undergraduates; 19% in diploma students; 36% in postgraduates and 42% in academics. Reservations of library materials has also reduced (70-80%). However, online renewal of library materials has increased by 110 % -150% in four user categories. Usage of online databases has been greatly increased and 27275 average total article downloads have been recorded for online databases subscribed by Consortium of Academic Libraries and 68545 average total article downloads by self-subscribed databases over the period 2014-2016. Since its inception, digital library has archived nearly 4000 documents and over 6000 user logins and 500, 000 searches have been recorded. In conclusion, all categories of library users have a declining trend in using physical library materials and services and have positive developments towards electronic information sources and services. Professional Prestige Scale of Sri Lankan Librarians: With Special Reference to Librarians in Public, School & University Libraries. Department of Library and Information Science,Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya,Sri Lanka. p 04., 2017) Ananda Tissa, R.D.There are several factors involving the progress and development of a profession. Social recognition is one of the leading factors. Professional prestige is one entity, which can evaluate profession and its status and situation. Therefore, scale was used to measure the professional prestige of Sri Lankan Librarians. Due to its enormity, librarians in public, school and university libraries were selected to study their professional prestige scaling. Principal objective of the study is to investigate the professional prestige scale of librarians in public, school and university libraries. The other objectives are to identify the professional prestige scale of librarians towards the other professionals and to identify the professional prestige scale of librarians as according to the library reader’s point of view and how readers view and accept the librarians. Total study is based on two stages 200 librarians repressing public, schools and universities were taken 200 readers also were taken as the sample numbering 400 persons. Both end the school category as well as the top the University librarians were used since it is expected to cover whole librarians with the public librarians. Readers groups are also a category recognized by the society. Sample 400 applied using sampling techniques like cluster and multi stage sampling. Data analysis was done using the SPSS. It was revealed that professional prestige was rather low level. Low attitude and knowledge of the public, towards the library services is also prevailed. Other point that even though the librarians are educated and qualified it could not be visualized from the librarians. Pale attitude and mentality of the librarians themselves was another factor found. Social recognition was low hence, it affected for the librarians professional prestige. Suggestions are to develop attitudes and mentality of the policy makers, planners and administrators, top management towards the librarians and the library profession. Compiling a library service manifesto is a timely requirement. It is proposed to establish a library and information science commission for Sri Lanka. Formulation of a proper recruitment, promotion policy is another step. Role and responsibility of the libraries themselves is another factor to be reckoned withItem Knowledge Networking Initiatives of the Indian National Agricultural Research and Education System (NARES).(Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya,Sri Lanka., 2017) Veeranjaneyulu, K.The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), the apex body for co-ordinating, guiding and managing research and education in agriculture including horticulture, fisheries and animal sciences in the entire country, consists of 101 ICAR institutes and 71 agricultural universities spread across the country and one of the largest national agricultural systems in the world. The human resources developed by the NARES have been primarily responsible for green, white, yellow, and blue revolutions signifying respectively increase in food grain, milk, oilseed and fish production. Realising the importance of the libraries, the ICAR through successive plans supported development of agricultural libraries in India. During the Agricultural Human Resources Development Project (AHRDP), funding support was extended for the collection development of select agricultural libraries. The focus was shifted towards development of hardware, software and connectivity during implementation of National Agricultural Technology Project (NATP). During implementation of National Agricultural Innovation Project (NAIP), much importance was given by the ICAR to agricultural libraries to move towards digital landscape. Flagship projects were implemented during this period to bring the libraries into limelight viz., Consortium for e-Resources in Agriculture (CeRA) – the national level e-resource consortium for agricultural libraries which connects all major agricultural university and ICAR institute libraries in India and ensure seamless access to more than 3000 online journals; KrishiKosh – a digital repository where all major agricultural libraries of the country are able to upload their digital knowledge resources for wider access.
