Item A comparative study on the themes and style of the English poet William Wordsworth and the Hindi poet Su:ryaka:nt Tripa:ʈhi: „Nira:la:‟(International Conference on the Humanities (ICH 2018/2019), Faculty of Humanities, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2018) Hirimuthugoda, H.D.Poetry, a carefully constructed structure with the use of meter, imagery, connotative and concrete words, is a form of expressing ideas that evoke an emotional experience. The English poet William Wordsworth is a leading poet in the Romantic Movement of England in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Romanticism emphasizes the individualistic, emotional and imaginative expression as well as rational analysis. Chhayavad, the Romantic Movement of the Hindi literature came into spotlight around the third and fourth decades of the twentieth century. Su:ryaka:nt Tripa:ʈhi: ‗Nira:la:‘ is considered as a prominent poet in the period of Chhayavad along with Sumitra:nandan Pant, Jaishankar Prasa:d and Maha:de:vi: Verma:. Both Wordsworh and Nira:la: are identified as revolutionary poets for their attempts to establish a new poetic tradition in English literature and Hindi literature respectively. The purpose of this study is to identify the thematic and stylistic similarities or dissimilarities that are distinct in the poetry of Wordsworth and Nira:la:, both being romantic poets from different social contexts in different periods of time. This comparative study is focused on ‗The Solitary Reaper‘, ‗I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud‘, ‗It is a Beauteous Evening, Calm and Free‘, ‗Love‘ and ‗The Old Cumberland Beggar‘ by Wordsworth and ‗To:dti: Patthar‘, ‘Sandhya: Sundari:‘, ‗Juhi: Ki: Kali:‘ and ‗Bhikshuk‘ by Nira:la:. This is a qualitative research study which is conducted through literary analysis. The evoking of emotions of the reader through the portrayal of the common man and the connection of human and nature were considered for the thematic analysis and the use of poetic devices of romanticism like personification, rhyme, rhythm, alliteration and metaphor were assessed for the stylistic analysis. It was discovered that the main themes of the compared poems are almost similar yet the sub themes and the connotative meanings are different. In addition, both the poets use poetic devices of romanticism accordingly to convey the message but there are contrastive instances in the use of symbols and the style of delivery. Indian diaspora; generally the Indians who are living away from their homeland face many struggles of ambivalence and adjustment. Indian immigrant being a human who is in search of identity in another human environment, Hindi immigrant literature has become a medium of portraying their experiences and mentalities. Objectives of this study are to identify the social and cultural experiences of Indian diaspora as depicted in Hindi immigrant literature and to motivate people towards contemporary literary studies and humanities. This research was done through secondary data of Indian immigrants and literature reviews. It was discovered that the Indian diaspora consists of two types of Indians: who emigrated due to the disappointment caused by the pushing factors and who immigrated because of the motivating aspects of the pulling factors. Thus the life of Indian diaspora is depicted in Hindi immigrant literature focusing on cultural shock and reverse cultural shock, economic, social and cultural struggles, discrimination, identity crisis, alienation and displacement, nostalgia, depression, cultural dichotomies, hybridity and generational gap. It is generally considered as the literature of immigrants. Indian immigrant literature is notable in universal immigrant literature. Indian immigrant literature written in Hindi has become significant in addressing the majority of Indians, intranationally and inter-nationally as well. The purpose of this study is to identify the main aspects of immigrant literature written in Hindi, as an emerging genre of literature in this globalized world and then to understand the life of Indian diaspora. Information was collected through secondary sources from internet. Hindi immigrant literature comes in many forms like poems, prose and fiction; prose and fiction have become the most suitable forms in detailed depiction of immigrant experience and diaspora. Being the genre of expressing mentalities of people living abroad, away from their homelands, immigrant literature is enriched with their experiences and struggles. Orientalism, cultural shock and reverse cultural shock, their economic, social and cultural struggles, discrimination, loss of identity, loneliness and depression, conflicts of Indianness and westernized aspects, generational gap of first and second generation immigrants are some major themes found in Hindi immigrant literature. Hybridity is another distinct aspect of this genre. When compared with male writers, female writers are more famous in Hindi immigrant literature, generally with a sense of feminist perspective about immigrant experience. This fact can be justified given that they are the mostly affected group of victims of uprooting and adjusting to new environments. In conclusion, Hindi immigrant literature shares many common aspects with universal immigrant/ migrant/ diasporic literature, addressing the Hindi speaking natives and Indian diaspora. Additionally, studying about emerging trends of Hindi literature is beneficial for contemporary Hindi studies.Item Practicality of Interpretation Practices to Enhance the Skills of Undergraduates Who Learn Hindi in Sri Lanka(In: Proceedings of the International Postgraduate Research Conference 2017 (IPRC – 2017), Faculty of Graduate Studies, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka., 2017) Hirimuthugoda, H.D.Interpretation can be identified as an oral or verbal form of translation. An interpreter generally needs to have an exhaustive grasp of both source and target languages, excellent verbal communication skills, satisfactory knowledge about the contexts on which the conversations are based on, good interpersonal skills and a very high level of concentration. Interpretation can be simultaneous as well as consecutive and also there are moral characteristics needed for the profession. Undergraduates, being the learners of knowledge and practice to become professionals later, have to enhance their soft skills as well as their knowledge. Education of Hindi as a foreign language in university level has offered academic knowledge to proceed in classical studies as well as to maintain Indo-Sri Lanka cultural, political and economic relations. The objective of this research is to assess the practicality of interpretation practices to enhance knowledge and soft skills of undergraduates, focusing on the improvement of lexical usage in fields where interpretation of Hindi is needed in Sri Lanka. This research was done based on the responses of a sample of B. A. (Special) undergraduates of Hindi, prior to the theoretical and practical lessons of interpretation and later. Recent speeches made in Hindi by few national leaders of India in International summits were used for practical lessons. It was discovered that undergraduates who merely knew about interpretation and its practice were confident that they can improve their lexical knowledge, general knowledge and soft skills through practices of interpretation. This research is significant for the sustainability of language practices of Hindi as a foreign language in Sri Lanka.
