Due to time and other constraints it was necessary to limit the sample for 10 schools in one district. Based on Attendance lists maintained by these schools, in order to give a fair chance to all, using simple random sampling method 05 students were selected to administer the questionnaire 1. The second questionnaire was administered among the language teachers of each school. (Two Language Teachers were selected by those schools according to the recommendation of principal.) It is common knowledge that though out the world before the invention of writing system and the resulting written tradition there had been the oral and listening tradition. The main instrument in the human communication is the language. Language, the fore runner of the writing, was an oral system of the transmission of human knowledge. Oral system of communication or oral system of knowledge transmission is inevitably linked to the listening or listening tradition. Even after the spread of writing tradition the listening tradition did not fade away. Instead, it became stronger pattern of communication. This can specially be seen in oriental countries. Folk tales of different kinds stand for this argument. Since the importance of listening tradition people in different cultures invented different instruments in order to sustain it. It is hypothesized here that the Buddhist religious/ social institute Dharmashala has been one of the main instruments in Sri Lanka in the development of listening tradition in the country. Studies on the transmission of knowledge is one of the key research areas in the field of library and information science.Item The Impact of Oral Tradition (Vedagata, Guru Mushti and Kem methods) on the Circulation of Knowledge in Indigenous Medicine: With Special Emphasis on Kurunegala District(Department of Library and Information Science, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2023) Herath, D.M.S.K.The purpose of the research “The Impact of Oral Tradition (Vedagata, Guru Mushti, and Kem methods, etc.) on the Circulation of Knowledge in Indigenous Medicine: With Special Emphasis on Kurunegala District” was to identify the role of oral methods in sharing the knowledge of the indigenous medicine. The sample was selected only from the registered traditional specialists (physicians) in the Kurunegala district, due to the limited access to an island-wide basis. All these participants were advanced in the respected subject and were expected to have a reasonable generalization about the research. The ethnographic research method has been used for the study. To accomplish the objective of the study, several methods were used for data collection, including semi-structured questionnaires, supplementary interviews, and observations. The supplementary interviews were conducted with the above-mentioned selected sample in Kurunegala district. The method that has been used to select the sample was the purposive sampling method. The researcher was able to reach the data saturation point once sharing 50 questionnaires and conducting the supplementary interviews with the same count. Therefore, the sample size can be defined as 50 (The size of the sample was not pre-defined, and data was collected through semi-structured questionnaires with the sample until the researcher arrived at the data saturation point along with the relevant process). Findings were confirmed by data obtained through secondary sources of literature review. The main finding of the study is that oral tradition has played a very important role in the circulation of knowledge of indigenous medicine since ancient times and it still plays a significant role in that field. The primary methods used to transmit traditional medical knowledge orally are, Vedagata, Guru Mushti, and Kem methods etc.Item Using Research to Promote Literacy and Reading in Libraries: (Public Libraries in Kurunegala District, Sri Lanka)(University of Kelaniya, 2015) Herath, D.M.S.K.Literacy is ability to read and write or knowledge that relates to a specified subject or subject area.
